In 2019, XUDA Engineering visited SELT MARINE's headquarters in Tunisia during the planning phase of a new facility designed for a production capacity of 3 metric tons per day (TPD) of refined carrageenan and agar powder. Our team developed the master plan for the project, which was divided into three phases. Although Phase I was finalized in 2020, progress was unfortunately delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our engineers are scheduled to revisit the new plant in September of this year to carry out the final commissioning and startup procedures.
SELT MARINE began carrageenan production in the 1990s and has since become the leading hydrocolloid manufacturer in North Africa, with its products mainly distributed across African and European markets. The completion of this new project will further strengthen the company's position in the industry and reinforce its leading role in shaping the hydrocolloid sector in North Africa.
To secure a consistent supply of high-quality raw materials, SELT MARINE has successfully leveraged Tunisia's strategic location by cultivating seaweed along the Mediterranean coast. After initial sun-drying, the seaweed is transported to the Sahara Desert in southwestern Tunisia, where it undergoes natural bleaching under the region's intense sunlight. This eco-friendly bleaching method significantly reduces the need for chemical bleaching agents in the hydrocolloid production process, thereby enhancing the overall quality of the final colloid product.
